‘Skywriter: Floating Bird Motel’
Fall 2018
This is a collaboration with Perry Kulper
‘Sky Writer: Floating Bird Motel’ utilizes collage-thinking, programmatically, reframing the familiar human-centric program of a motel. Tactics deployed are linked to utilizing loaded programmatic elements—a float/ shrine, a theater, an honorific bird, or talisman, dispersed houses and house fragments, the construction of an artificial weather systems garden, and a translation of Marc-Antoine Laugier’s primitive hut. In combination with a site undergoing constant construction and reconstruction as evidenced by a log, this hypothetical project reroutes human non-human relationships, deploying various technologies, programs and material formations to rethink human dominance over other life-forms.
The interests in the project include: the development of non-perspectival space; mixing natural and machine technologies; articulating artificial and real temporalities; and thinking about multiple aerial lifestyles. Ultimately, by challenging norms, varying the material, atmospheric and situational conditions of the motel establish a sense of familiar strangeness through the juxtaposition of distant realities in this floating motel’ish proposal for birds.
